In the mind of a wizard: Sioul
The other day I posted about Tamzyn, and the way I develop my characters. Read it! You may find it interesting, both if you are a writer or a player.
Today I’ll talk about the male character: Sioul.
In him, I want to show masculine strength, just as Tamzyn represented the feminine.
Once again, we begin by defining his physical and existential traits:
- He belongs to the culture of the Golden People, who live in the northern region of Drozz. They spend part of the year dwelling in caves during winter and summer, and the rest in the forest.
- He was raised by his mother, who was a shaman.
- He is a wizard— not a scholar, not a sage, not an intellectual. He’s a damn wizard!
- He is a physically strong man.
- He is human and mortal.
- He’s handsome, but not in a conventionally way.
- He has had prior dealings with the dryads before meeting Tamzyn.
All of this gives rise to a certain way of being:
- Golden People: He has a special cultural and physical heritage. The Golden People are built a bit different. They are stolid people, that endure cold, prefer low light, have golden hair, light eyes, and have a high degree of recovery and toughness. They are not an open society, and their society lacks hierarchy. As a result, Sioul doesn't handle concepts like Kings, countries, and norms the same way as most people.
- His mother: his mother taught him the basics of magic. He learned to see the world in a different way, in a magical way. He also feels the Magic Council didn't treat his mother right, and when she died, he didn't feel support from them. Because of this, he feels scorn for the Council. This, and the devotion he felt for his mother makes him feel empathy to women when they suffer unfair treatment. Not in the modern sense, though, but as a personal way of being.
- Wizard: In my universe, magic is not an intellectual discipline. It's not something of logical thinking. In most books and stories, people associate being a wizard with studying something, like when someone prepares for being a doctor or a lawyer. No way!
Sioul is a very powerful wizard, and those are his virtues, not intellect. Although he is intelligent, his kind of intelligence is generalist, not specialized, and has its bases on (again) intuition, willpower and passion.
The mastering of magic implies focusing your intuition to something productive, endure and resist against spiritual and mundane situations, and putting passion in what you desire to get.
- Resilience: Because of what we just said, and because of situations he endured in life, Sioul has a strong resilience. Resilience is needed in a wizard to overcome the huge difficulties of his art.
- Self-control: This is vital for a wizard. As said in the intro of the game, a wizard needs passion to alter reality, but self-control to channel his power. He rarely will act following her feelings blindly, will measure his need, and then carefully proceed. This makes Tamzyn feel he's not interested in her.
- Stubbornness: He is tough and stubborn. Follows his own way, and if he follows another person, it's because he loves that person.
- Passion: very important in a wizard. With all what we said, that reveals in his gestures, his hands, his tenacity, and sometimes in the way he express his emotions, when he does. As we said, he will think twice before he does, but when he does, he'll be absolutely passionate.
- Philocalist: As the Oxford English dictionary defines it: lover of beautiful things. Let it be a forest, a place, or Tamzyn. He lives by his sight, and loves exploring because of the wonders he wants to find and watch.
- Man: As a man, Sioul tends to act and not overthink. If he has a fear or problem, he just says "we'll get it sorted out". Very emotional situations sometimes overload him, and he doesn't know how to handle them. In those moments, he would love a woman that he can trust, and who can repair that sensation of instability. If you don't agree these features are in him because of being male, just comment! :D
- Strong: Physically strong, but not trained in battle. He can do works that require strength, but if he has to fight with his hands, he will probably be very basic. Tamzyn is the warrior, not him.
- Human and mortal: As a mortal, he knows his time is limited. Meeting Tamzyn, he is more conscious of the distance that mortality puts between them. She looks like a distant star to him, out of reach. He wonders if he is important to her at all, or just an anecdote in the middle of eternity.
- Handsome but unusual: yeah he's hot, but he's a wizard, a weirdo, and he doesn't stop. He's always wandering the world. So his relationships usually didn't last a bit. Simply because no one follows him, or he doesn't stay. Too chaotic, interested on strange things, risky, and introvert. You don't want him as boyfriend, do you?
- Dealt with the dryads: Before he met Tamzyn, he was on some dryads' forest twice. They put a sack in his head before they guided him into their realm, and made him stay with his head covered all the time. They brought him there to ask for some potions to cure their queen. They did it because Sioul was inexperienced. He only knew how a dryad looks when Tamzyn visited him in his tower. But he knows the theory. These experiences made him curious on these creatures, and that is the reason why he followed Tamzyn to save her mother.
I have enough to begin writing chapters in the game with these two interacting and add more stories.
Hope this helps you more to understand the twisted mind of a wizard.
