Adding experience points to my game: decide your upgrades

Caverns and Dryads will soon add an experience points system. I'm currently testing it!

So this post is to show and tell you how it will work ;)

EXPERIENCE SYSTEM

Experience is handled by several variables:

  • Experience or total experience: this is the total of exp points earned, that serves you to boast with your friends! If you got some points in the leaderboards, they will be added to your experience.
  • Accumulation: it's like a progress bar, that counts to 100, and then once you reach that, you get 1 upgrade point.
  • Upgrade Points: this is a point that you can add to any stat below 18, to raise them. For example, to mastery or to strength, as you wish!
You can get experience points doing these things:
  • Battle: Monsters have 4 levels (1= basic, 4 is a boss). You get level x 3 experience. So a weak monster defeated gets you 3 experience points, a medium one 6, a strong one 9, and a boss gives you 12.
  • Finishing a main quest: I've set it to 250. Also consider that along the main quest you may sometimes get a stat raise on some moments.They can also add some extra experience at some points.
  • Finishing a job: You get 75 points. So doing the jobs that merchants and other NPCs or the Purple King suggest you, will get you experience points and money.
  • Chapters of story: Some chapters may add extra experience points.
And to balance the game, these things change:
  • Sanctuaries: There are 3 in the game: Palace of the Woods, Mansion of Dreams, and Palace of the Dryads. On them, the Gods may raise one stat randomly 1 point. Some dryads may also bless you with a 2 points random stat raise. But the idea is to give you control about what you raise, and promote combat and exploration and not so farming. So now the dryads and gods won't raise your stats above the default initial value +1. Sanctuaries now just help, but don't replace the upgrade system, that will now depend on your combat, adventuring and exploration, and finishing quests and jobs.
So why would you visit sanctuaries? To recover camping your stamina, mana and health (in exchange for mana), and get some recovery if your stats get diminished below the initial value (they may, sometime, as low as 5). Also to get 1 random point raise or 2 every time you find a god or high dryad.

I'm also adding a sacrificial magic spell on the upcoming adventure. Sacrificial magic is very powerful. But it consumes all your upgrade points, your current accumulation, and also reduces some points from some stats.
This creates a need for seasoned players to explore and combat and do quests. But it may be worthwhile because using a sacrificial spell could help you a lot in some situations that otherwise may be critical!

Here's the Windows version, which has the complete interface. When you get at least 1 upgrade point, a blinking golden "UPGRADE" text appears on the image of the protagonists.



Also, on the bottom of the screen, where the character stats and data are, you will see the experience, upgrade points that you have, and the percentage of progress to get an upgrade point. 

It will show 100% if you have at least 1 available. And a "CLICK TO UPGRADE!" message will show, blinking in golden color. 



You can then click on that part of the interface that shows all this, or in the protagonists' image above on the exploration map. This will open the upgrade screen:


You can distribute the point earned as you wish, and reset the values if needed. Clicking on each stat tells you what it's for.

Once you like how you assigned it, you click continue to return to the game. If you didn't use your point, it will be kept there (unless you use sacrificial magic).

On the Android version, the interface is more compact, so only the upgrade message appears over the protagonists in the exploration map.

If I notice that this system needs more or less experience given on each defeated enemy or other situations, I will modify it. The purpose is to make a fun and engaging system! :)

In fact, this has been added because some players suggested it. This is my game and ultimately I do what I like, but I always listen!
