Plans for the cities of Caverns and Dryads
I want to include an important change in the cities of the next release of Caverns and Dryads.
Some players said it is a bit annoying that when you enter a city, it works the same way as in a dungeon: you advance and things happen 100% procedurally.
At the same time, I wish to keep space for random events, surprise and unexpected events.
This is how cities work now (screenshot from Android version below): you walk, and there's a % off finding something. You then got a random event, that can be a blacksmith, a bar, an inn, etc. You may be lucky and find all good things, or some bad, or almost nothing and leave the city without having what you wanted. You just choose like in dungeons, which way to go, the upper or the lower path.
And I plan to change the navigation to choose where to go instead of just advance and face random things. This is only for the cities and in the dungeons it makes full sense. But cities are supposed to be more predictable and casual places.
The map of the city will change to something like this below, connected places in which you select where to go.
So I plan to change how they work:
- Now you will arrive the city and decide what district to go (the commerce one, the city center, etc)-
- Then you can go there, and visit directly the shop, blacksmith or whatever special place.
- In the way to the location, random events like robber, job hiring, etc may happen as usual.
- Chapters of the story will happen also between places or on some kind of places in the city, as usual.
- You will leave the city anytime you want to.
- You will be able to visit the city once, and then be mandatory to go to another place nearby (dungeons usually). This is how it worked originally, but I changed so you can re-enter. But with this change, it may need to be done this way again to prevent cheating.
- The shops' items will be generated once you enter the city and don't change in the same session, if you leave the shop and visit it again. They will be re-generated only if you leave the city, go elsewhere, and return.
